The department was started for undergraduate courses in the year 1964. It is one of the most opted subjects among students of Faculty of Arts. Mrs. Suman Pate was the first faculty and Head of the department. The department is known for conducting a mixture of activities on topics of social relevance in present times. As the subject is also opted by students appearing for Civil Services Examinations, it fetches a great value in academics. It has an additional benefit of brainstorming students about issues related with social life, family life and surrounding.
Dr. Mrs. Pratibha Lade was the next faculty in who was followed by Mrs. Sangita Somvanshi and Ms. Shilpa Meshram.
The department has handsome amount of books and encyclopaedias in the library especially meant for Social Sciences and Sociology. Students have been enriching their knowledge since all these years with noteworthy satisfaction.
The department has been conducting seminars, group discussions, classroom activities such as essay writing competition, debate competition, etc. on annual basis. Experts in the field of Sociological Studies are more often called in for delivering lectures to students. Conducting monthly tests and preliminary examinations as per university examination pattern is done on regular basis. Proper guidance is provided to students not only for academics but for personality development.
The department is also actively engaged in Psycho-Social Counselling Cell and Social Outreach Cell.
