Department of Physics

About

The Department of Physics has been established in the year 1969. The department is housed in the building facing to VIP road and in the premises of holy Deekshabhoomi . Subsequent heads were late Dr. J.G. Dupare, Shri. G.B. wankar and Shri. T.C. Warkar. Now Dr. ( Mrs. ) S.M. Naranje holding the responsibility of the department as head since August 2007. She is also acting as Vice-Principal of the college in the faculty of science. The department has five teachers in senior division (U.G.) , four teachers on Adhoc basis ( for P.G.), six teachers(CHB), and five teachers in Junior division along with seven technical staff.

The department runs Junior division courses (HSSC), undergraduate degree courses,(opting PCM,PEM, PSM, PCOM, SCOP), postgraduate degree courses (M.Sc.) in Physics and one year post graduate diploma course in nanoscience and nanotechnology. Dr. K.G. Rewatkar is the coordinator of the P.G. programs. The strength of the students is 400 for degree courses.

The regular features of the department is to share knowledge through various activities such as research publications in national and international journals, organizing workshops, seminars MRPs (major and minor), invited talks, guest lectures, interaction with scientists of international repute and encouraging students to participate in various academic activities. To keep entire system fully functional, laboratory staff also gets trained from time to time so that they can work independently.

The department has five laboratories (one U. G., two junior, one P.G. , one research). The department has core library having 700 books on various topics of Physics. The department is well equipped with various equipments like high temperature furnace, vacuum furnace, digital balance, UV-Source, temperature controller unit, pallet making machine, four probe unit, crystal growth system, impedance analyser, Hall coefficient apparatus, Electromagnet of 20 Kg, Universal B-H curve trace, 8085 microprocessor kit, logic gates, monostable multivibrator, manometer (pressure measuring instrument), power amplifier, phase shift oscillator, Hartley oscillator, Colpitts oscillator, LASER intensity measurement kit, Michelson interferometer, OP-AMP Universal kit, decoder, Photo cell, Solar cell, spectrometers, over head projector, LCD projector, smart teaching aid, ICT, function generator, power supplies, analog and digital multimeters and many more. The faculty is actively involved in research work in various fields like luminescence, ferrites, nanoscience and nanotechnology, materials science and medical sciences etc. One major and three minor research projects sponsored by U.G.C. , D.S.T and other agencies have been completed. Two major and two minor research projects are ongoing. Two National and one international conferences have been organized by the department during 2011- 2016. Two University level workshops on syllabus framing and examination pattern were also organized.

In aggregate more than 100 research papers have been published by faculty in national and international journals. Consultancy service is provided for students and teachers of other colleges/Institutes through (i) Analysis of materials by electrical and dialectical measurements, (ii) Analysis by Hysteresis (B/H) and magnetic susceptibility measurements (iii) X-ray Diffraction Analysis (iv) Synthesis of Nano materials by sol-gel auto combustion technique. Faculty is associated with various national and international scientific bodies. Faculty is also associated with RTM Nagpur University Board of studies in Physics, it is actively involved in designing the syllabus and other activities.

The department conducted certificate course on “Astronomy and Astrophysics”, celebrated World Meteorological Day, conducts every year Intercollegiate Physics Quiz Competition. Every year students participate in VUPTAs student seminar competition and bring laurels to the department by winning the prizes. Students from the department opt for higher education like M.Sc. and other courses in reputed nationalized institutes like IITs. Many of the students are working in reputed firms at national and international level. Few students have joined defence services also. Every year subject related souvenir “ VIBGYOR” edited by students gets released, department organizes workshops, seminars, guest lectures, group discussion, essay competition, educational visits and many more activities for the benefits of students and for all round development of their personalities.
