The Department of Chemistry started functioning in the year 1969 with the B Sc course. Junior division was started in the year 1975. M Sc course was introduced in the year 2002 with organic chemistry as specialization and medicinal chemistry as elective subject.
Dr M R Awode (1969-2002) was the pioneer of this department who established a sound base for research, teaching and extension activities in the field of chemistry.
The Department of Chemistry is one of the premier science departments of the College with a dedicated and committed group of teachers who are not only keen in imparting quality education to the students but are also actively engaged in research. Undergraduate department consists of four full time faculty members. Post graduate department has three full time faculty members. Junior division consists of four members. Department has one assistant and six technical staff members. The undergraduate course consists of theoretical papers on inorganic, organic and physical chemistry.
The department has received research grants from UGC under minor and major project schemes. In year 2014, the chemistry laboratory has received recognition from Rashtrasant Tukdoji Maharaj Nagpur University as research laboratory .Three faculty members are recognized Ph D supervisors of RTM Nagpur university. At present, 7 research students are working in the department.
Faculty members take efforts to make lectures more effective and useful by providing students with synopses of the lectures, internet sources etc. Practical experiments, unit tests, assignments, surprise tests, seminars, power point presentations, interactive discussions, projects, models, charts, workshop, certificate courses, also form part of the teaching process.
The department installs chemical society at the beginning of every session. Chemical society members actively take part in organizing various curricular activities like poster competitions, guest lectures, quiz competitions, industry visits etc. The faculty members prepare students towards various intercollegiate competitions. Many of the students have brought laurels to the college by winning these competitions. The faculty members encourage students towards examinations such as NET/SET/GATE/JAM etc.
With a view to develop personality and confidence amongst our students and in order to give them a cutting edge in a highly competitive world, the department regularly organizes soft skill development programs.
