Department of English

About

The Department of English dates back to the same year the college was established, in 1964. The number of students increased year after year and now the Department of English has come to a full bloom with students in the undergraduate level. To cater to the growing needs of the students’ love of learning of English Literature, the Post Graduate Department of English was started in the year 1994-95. The faculties teach in Faculty of Arts, Commerce and Science at undergraduate levels as well as post graduate levels. Shifting from the annual pattern, as directed and implemented by the university, now we are following the semester patterns at all the levels.

The department through its various programmes as planned in the annual programme plan conducts various activities where learner’s preferences and enrichment is focused. English Literary Association is a forum especially established to hold a banner under which all the activities such as guest lectures, workshops, class-seminars, essay writing competitions, elocutions and calligraphy, literary quiz competitions are conducted every year. In addition to the stock plan, the department puts in special efforts to create and realize innovative programmes with the help of technology gadgets.

The department has a dedicated space in the institution (Room No-33). Language Laboratory was set up in the year 2010 wherein it is facilitated with 01 TEACHER and 10 STUDENTS computed units. CLARITY SNET- VERSION 7.0, YOUNG INDIA FILMS, CHENNAI, MICROSOFT OPEN LICENSE AGREEMENT, AUTHORIZATION: 67543848ZZE1210, AGREEMENT : 47548517, PRODUCT : WINPRO 7 SNGL UPGRD, DESCRIPTION OLP NL ACDMC FQC- 02312 is used to operate the laboratory. This provides a glorious feature to the department where technology based teaching-learning actually becomes a part of academic practices. We also have separate classrooms with ICT facilities in addition to the Language Laboratory.

The department also offers certificate courses on communication skills and improvement of LSRW among students from all the faculties. Weaker students are identified by conduction an Aptitude Test on basic questions taken from grammar of English language and a few details on writers in English and Indo-anglian literature. Such students are then mentored by respective class teachers and provided extra attention by conducting special classes.

Great care is taken towards completion of syllabus for all the faculties and conduction of monthly tests as well as semester examination based on the university examination pattern. Students are evaluated through such tests and provided guidance on answering questions while they actually appear for university examinations.

All the members conduct special classes for UNNATI-a self development programme for students as well as work for different in-house committees and cells.
